Optical Designer / Concepteur(trice) - Optique
Quebec, Quebec, CA
Job Summary
As a member of the multidisciplinary team within the MDR Optics Development Group (Optical Instruments Division), the Optical Designer works on the design of test and measurement systems for our clients operating in the Manufacturing and Research & Development sectors. The Optical Designer must understand the physical phenomena underlying the measurements and is responsible for the optical elements of the products, from feasibility analysis, design and development, through qualification and transfer to production. He will also take part in the full lifecycle of our product line.
Your Role
More specifically, the Optical Designer must:
- Explain and describe physical phenomena that influence the quality of the measurement targeted by the product.
- Perform analyses, simulations, and preliminary setups prior to the design phase.
- Interpret measurement requirements and their impact on the various design elements.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electronics, and software specialists (embedded, signal processing, and high‑level) to ensure successful integration of the product’s intended measurement chain.
- Design optical circuits that allow quantitative interpretation of these phenomena.
- Define and write a structured and comprehensive qualification plan.
- Conduct the tests and measurements required for product qualification.
- Guide and supervise, when necessary, technicians, junior designers, and interns in performing various validation or qualification tests.
- Perform metrological uncertainty analyses and calculations to justify specifications.
- Write test, experiment, and product qualification reports, as well as design documents that thoroughly describe the product.
- Define and draft assembly and production test procedures.

- Good knowledge of opto-mechanics and optoelectronics.
- Good understanding of optical physical phenomena affecting fiber‑optic transmission.
- Familiarity with measurement instruments commonly used in optical test and measurement.
- Familiarity with components and devices used in designing optical test equipment (lasers, detectors, couplers, filters, circulators, diffraction gratings).
- Basic knowledge of metrology, particularly uncertainty calculations used to define specifications.
- Proficiency in Matlab, Excel, and Word.
- Knowledge of laboratory or manufacturing markets is an asset.
Required Aptitudes
- Team spirit and strong communication skills.
- Ability to work within a project‑driven environment while meeting deadlines.
- Demonstrated rigor in executing mandates and documenting work.
